Rally/Lobby Day, to Push For State Senate Vote on Raising Pennsylvania’s Minimum Wage on Monday, June 5, 2006 At State Capitol
Harrisburg, PA: The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO along with the members of the “Raise the Minimum Wage Coalition” and Legislative supporters will hold a rally/lobby day at the State Capitol on Monday, June 5, 2006 to convince the leadership of the State Senate to allow a vote on raising Pennsylvania’s minimum wage. The rally will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. Hundreds of people, representing organized labor, the faith community, young and low wage workers, community and advocacy organizations will attend the rally. Workers from Philadelphia, Allentown, and Pittsburgh will arrive in the morning before the rally to lobby State Senators in support of a $7.15 minimum wage by 2007 with an annual cost of living adjustment.
There is strong bi-partisan support in the State Senate for raising the minimum wage but the leadership of the Senate has refused to allow a vote in nine years. Pennsylvania should now join the 21 states that have already raised their minimum wage including the surrounding states of New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia. This week both Houses of the North Carolina Legislature raised the minimum wage and the Louisiana State Senate approved a minimum wage increase. What are we waiting for?
