2004 Convention Resolutions

Resolution No. 28

MEDICARE

WHEREAS, The Medicare Program, which is financed equally by employers and workers; and

The Medicare Program is the universal retirement program for all workers; and

Right Wing advocates continuously advocate privatizing Medicare by creating private investment accounts managed by private sector investors; and

Privatization of Medicare will destroy the defined benefit that Medicare now pays; and

Privatization will subject eligible retirees to the ups and downs of the investment cycle, undermining the security of Social Security payments; and

The thrust of the privatization proposals is to transfer Social Security to Wall Street and it’s financial intermediaries for their profit undermining Social Security’s defined benefits and enriching the money managers at the cost of Social Security retirees.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and it’s affiliates, strongly oppose privatization of Social Security and maintain the reliable Social Security defined benefit.
