2004 Convention Resolutions
Resolution No. 54
NATIONAL HEALTH CARE
WHEREAS, The United States of America is the wealthiest country in the world, and
Despite this wealth almost 50 million Americans have no Health Insurance, including millions of children, and
As a result of this lack of Health Insurance, many men, women and children are suffering and dying needlessly, and others are forced to use Emergency Rooms as their only source of care, and
The use of the Emergency Room system by millions who cannot afford to pay for Health Care causes the cost of those who have Insurance to pay even higher costs for their coverage, and
Some of the nation's and Pennsylvania's largest and wealthiest employers do not provide their employees, and their dependents, with adequate health insurance shifting those costs to us to be paid with tax dollars and higher insurance premiums, and
This extreme escalation of costs is then forcing more people to lose the Health Insurance they have, thus making the cycle self-sustaining, then
THEREFORE, BE IT SO RESOLVED, That we must have a quality system of National Health Care, available to everyone, regardless of his or her ability to pay.
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO at this Convention go on record supporting national and state legislation requiring that employers take the responsibility of providing adequate health insurance for their employees, and their dependents, or be taxed the amount necessary to provide these benefits.
