UWUA Family Member Pursuing Master of Public Health; Union Plus Scholarship Deadline This Weekend
The 2021 Union Plus Scholarship application deadline is this Sunday, Jan. 31. The Union Plus Scholarship Program awards scholarships based on outstanding academic achievement, personal character, financial need and commitment to the values of organized labor. Union Plus Scholarship awards are granted to students attending a two-year college, four-year college, graduate school, or recognized technical or trade school.
Ariel Muñoz is among last year’s Union Plus Scholarship winners, earning a $4,000 scholarship to apply to her graduate studies. She is pursuing a master’s degree in public health in infectious diseases and vaccinology at the University of California, Berkeley, and expects to complete her degree this May. After earning her master’s, Muñoz plans to conduct global health research in preparation for pursuit of a doctoral degree. Her career objective is to help alleviate health burdens in underserved communities through a role at a public health agency such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization.
Muñoz is thankful for the benefits that her father’s 20-year Utility Workers (UWUA) membership has afforded their family. “UWUA provided my father with workplace justice, which has allowed me to seize several opportunities that have led to my current academic and professional success,” Muñoz said. “I consider myself a product of the union’s support.” Visit UnionPlus.org/Scholarship for applications and benefit eligibility.
