STATEMENT ON EXECUTIVE ORDER ATTACKING FEDERAL UNION RIGHTS

“On Thursday, March 27, Donald Trump declared war on the American working class.

We stand in solidarity with federal service workers facing the largest attack on union rights in American history. Not since the Battle of Blair Mountain has federal power been turned so decisively against American workers.

The White House’s attempt to strip nearly a million workers of their legal right to collectively bargain is a blatantly illegal attack on the tens of millions of workers that belong to a labor union, and the fundamental civil right of American workers to choose to join one.

Donald Trump won’t stop with the federal service if he’s allowed to win. Teachers, nurses, tradespeople, municipal workers, and union members from all walks of life will face the same threat as federal workers do. Congressional allies of the White House have already introduced H.R. 1232, a national so-called Right-to-Work Bill which, if enacted, would destroy our movement nationally.

Seven Mountains AFL-CIO is, along with the national labor movement, taking immediate action to fight back against the declaration of war on workers. Pennsylvania’s working people have defeated threats to our fundamental rights before, and we can do it again.

As a first step, we are participating in the April 5 State College 'Hands Off' protest sponsored by the local chapter of Indivisible, and supported nationally by AFL-CIO affiliate unions. We will encourage our affiliate unions to participate as well. This is the first step in escalating toward future demonstrations, including plans to locally mark May 1, International Workers' Day, with a show of national and global working class resistance to the billionaire class.

We alone can decide whether we face the threat as a united front, or we allow the billionaire class to divide and conquer us. This is the moment in which we must decide which side we are on: the American working class, or corporate cronies and the ruling elite."
